REPORTS -
A. Creative Programs
Creative District — Commissioners applauded the state certification of Edmonds as the first Creative
District, noting that Edmonds has become far more than a ferry stop and the state recognition will
help advance many of the community goals including diversity and inclusion. Chapin thanked
Commissioners for attending the presentation event that morning and for their ongoing support and
contributions to the application process. As the Creative District gets underway there may be
opportunities to acknowledge that identity visually for the Arts Commission.
Presentation —The Mayor presented Suzy Maloney with a paper weight, thanking her for her 8 years
of service to the City and emphasizing how vital the role of volunteers is in achieving all we do in the
City. Kaplan thanked Maloney and other commissioners and Chapin joined in their thanks for all the
skills and energy she brought to the Commission.
Commissioner Position / Nominations — The due date has been extended to Friday Dec 14.
Commissioners discussed availability for three of them to interview the applicants. Most likely
interview dates at this point are December 17, 18, and/or 20, or in January.
4. Public Art — Chapin presented screen shots of work Rose is doing on a walking tour of public art
which will work on mobile devices and can be accessed from a URL. In response to community
discussion about outdoor art in 2016 this walking tour will include the City's public art collection,
outdoor murals, and other privately owned art visible in the public realm. Commissioners were very
appreciative of this work and commended Rose on her progress with this as well as shepherding the
revised version of the Public Art walking tour brochure which will be printed this month. Applications
for the Dayton Street Plaza sign temporary artwork were reviewed. One or two artists will be
contacted to submit site specific concepts.
Concerts — Kaplan went over the process involved with selection of concert performers.
Commissioners interested in reviewing submissions included Muir, Soikowski, Kaplan, ONeill and
student representative Wilhelm. There are 7 concerts at City Park funded by EAC and sponsors
(Honda and Acura) and 12 at Hazel Miller Plaza funded by the Hazel Miller Foundation. Additional

discussion followed about diversity of performances, and about the opportunity to possibly partner
with ECA and/or the Library on additional free performances on the stage at FAC. The idea of
including food trucks with an evening performance was raised, possibly on a Friday adjacent to the
free outdoor movie nights.
B. Capital Projects
C. Funding & Administration
STAFF REPORT— Chapin and Sharp reported on the public open house for gateway signage. Attendance was
modest but it seemed that people were happy with the process of reviewing sign types and felt heard. The
next public meeting to review concepts is on January 10 at 6 pm in the Plaza Room. Additional discussion
followed about the potential of visiting the Center School and meeting with members of their Race and
Equity team. It may not be the best time to do this since they are very busy at this time. The focus from the
Arts Commission is on how to encourage our community to be welcoming, inviting and safe for all.
