REPORTS -
A. Creative Programs
1. Creative District — Chapin updated commissioners regarding amendments to the work plan and
contract with State still in process.
Program Expenditures/Revenues 2018 — Chapin reviewed the special funds for the Arts and specific
program expenditures and revenues. She noted the sizeable revenue for Write on the Sound which
helps support other programs in the arts since the City Council allocation of $15,000 from the general
fund for programming has not changed since 1985. Chapin reiterated the importance of this revenue
and congratulated the arts commission on continuing to present a high quality and very popular
conference at an affordable price which makes it accessible to a broad range of people.
Inclusion/Diversity Discussion — Oneill and Kaplan reported on their meeting, including Chapin, with
the principal and one of the art teachers at the arts focused Center School in Seattle Center. The
discussion centered on what they do at the school and their commitment to inclusion. Arts
commissioners spoke about their concern for the way people participating in our events are treated
within the community. There was discussion of how to understand the experience of others and the
post -traumatic stress that can accrue to past experiences and seemingly unconscious oppression
within our society. Commissioners expressed need to know more about conflict resolution and how
to understand the experience of others. Various ideas and resources were discussed by
commissioners and the student representative. Awareness is key, name something and it becomes
part of consciousness. Commissioners suggested Soikowski lead an exercise with them at the spring
Retreat. In the meantime Chapin will try to set up a meeting with members of the partnership
committee of the Diversity Commission.
4. Temporary Public Art— Commissioners reviewed the three concepts for the Dayton Street Plaza sign
post submitted by Matthew Dockery. After extensive discussion about all three concepts and their
suitability for the site, safety, cultural meaning, potential vandalism etc., Kaplan Moved and Muir
Seconded approval of concept #3 with the kinetic option, Approved.

ESD.
