3. Energy Star partnership
Jim Stevens, City of Edmonds facilities manager, will give a report at next month's meeting.
4. Update on downtown merchants GHG reduction program
The subcommittee distributed materials to eight downtown businesses (retail and offices,
including Steve B.'s office.) Steve feels there is a lot of potential to increase awareness and make
positive changes without large costs. Flank would like to partner with Jim Stevens in order to
focus efforts. He mentioned that Snohomish County has discontinued their Energy Star program.
5. Possible community open house
Steve B. asked how we can spread the word to the community, including public education and
obtaining community input. Some ideas were offered, such as an event in conjunction with
Earth Day, an event in Yost Park, speakers at the theater, or something similar to Shoreline's
environmental fair. Sally will contact the committee via email to further discuss possible ideas.
6. "SCALLOPS"
Steve B. indicated that there's a summit meeting in Port Townsend on January 13 hosted by a
citizen -based group on sustainability. The purpose of the summit is too pool regional
information.
7. Discussion of comments to the draft document "Comprehensive Climate Approach for
Washington"
On December 21, the Governor's climate action team presented its report for public comment.
Comments are due by January 15. Please send your comments to Wes and he will draft a letter
for Gary's signature. Hanle, Wes, and Steve B. reviewed the report and provided the committee
with their comments. Janice also mentioned that she was concerned with a gap in planning and
greening of towns in the report. Wes was concerned that the goals of the Governor's team may
not even be possible, considering the expected increase in population by 2050.
8. Discussion of adding GHG survey for individuals on the Edmonds website
Wes asked if we can add a program on the City's website that allows citizens to input their usage
information. Gary indicated that the City's IT staff is currently revamping the website and
something like this could be considered.
Miscellaneous
Steve F. was approached by Clean Air Northwest, which offers a program that calculates
citywide carbon footprints. He will follow up and determine if this is something we can use in
conjunction with our small business group.
Bob Freeman attended a meeting at Seattle Pacific University sponsored by statewide
environmental groups to prepare for presentation to the State legislature such things as local
solutions to global warming and specific bills they want to introduce. More information can be
found at www.environmentalpriorities.org.
Carolyn is active with EdCC and a program that offers college classes to citizens over 50 years
old. She has volunteered our committee to help with a class on environmental issues, which will
be offered on April 29, May 5, and May 9. She will have various speakers and topics, including
an opening by the Mayor and tapes provided by Boeing and Wal-Mart.
