Geo-thermal heat pumps presentation Rick Jenness gave a presentation titled, "Harnessing the Earth's Unlimited Free Energy — Geothermal Heat Pump Technology." 2. Green building codes Rob distributed several handouts from local agencies, including King County and the City of Seattle, regarding green building codes and sustainable building programs. [Rob provided a summary of his presentation in a separate memo with attachments.] Rob will discuss the topic further at next month's meeting. ClimateProtection/MeetingNotes010308doc 3. Energy Star partnership Jim Stevens, City of Edmonds facilities manager, will give a report at next month's meeting. 4. Update on downtown merchants GHG reduction program The subcommittee distributed materials to eight downtown businesses (retail and offices, including Steve B.'s office.) Steve feels there is a lot of potential to increase awareness and make positive changes without large costs. Flank would like to partner with Jim Stevens in order to focus efforts. He mentioned that Snohomish County has discontinued their Energy Star program. 5. Possible community open house Steve B. asked how we can spread the word to the community, including public education and obtaining community input. Some ideas were offered, such as an event in conjunction with Earth Day, an event in Yost Park, speakers at the theater, or something similar to Shoreline's environmental fair. Sally will contact the committee via email to further discuss possible ideas. 6. "SCALLOPS" Steve B. indicated that there's a summit meeting in Port Townsend on January 13 hosted by a citizen -based group on sustainability. The purpose of the summit is too pool regional information. 7. Discussion of comments to the draft document "Comprehensive Climate Approach for Washington" On December 21, the Governor's climate action team presented its report for public comment. Comments are due by January 15. Please send your comments to Wes and he will draft a letter for Gary's signature. Hanle, Wes, and Steve B. reviewed the report and provided the committee with their comments. Janice also mentioned that she was concerned with a gap in planning and greening of towns in the report. Wes was concerned that the goals of the Governor's team may not even be possible, considering the expected increase in population by 2050. 8. Discussion of adding GHG survey for individuals on the Edmonds website Wes asked if we can add a program on the City's website that allows citizens to input their usage information. Gary indicated that the City's IT staff is currently revamping the website and something like this could be considered. Miscellaneous Steve F. was approached by Clean Air Northwest, which offers a program that calculates citywide carbon footprints. He will follow up and determine if this is something we can use in conjunction with our small business group. Bob Freeman attended a meeting at Seattle Pacific University sponsored by statewide environmental groups to prepare for presentation to the State legislature such things as local solutions to global warming and specific bills they want to introduce. More information can be found at www.environmentalpriorities.org. Carolyn is active with EdCC and a program that offers college classes to citizens over 50 years old. She has volunteered our committee to help with a class on environmental issues, which will be offered on April 29, May 5, and May 9. She will have various speakers and topics, including an opening by the Mayor and tapes provided by Boeing and Wal-Mart. ClimateProteclioii/Meet higNotes0 10308doc
