Discussion on comprehensive plan — community sustainability element Rob previously distributed the updated document and asked for feedback: does it make sense, and does it cover all the appropriate topics? Committee members offered several suggestions, including adding a section on composting/recycling, maintaining healthy forests in conjunction with the right to sunlight/solar panels, and privatizing local water rights. There was some discussion regarding the title "community health," and if another title might better define the topics. Gary is currently on the County Executive's Green Ribbon Committee, community health subcommittee. Other subcommittees include: Green Economy, Healthy Lifestyles & Livable Communities, Energy Conservation & Innovation, Natural Resources Management Committee. Wes will provide suggested wording to Rob regarding Kyoto Protocol information beyond 2012. Once Rob has all the suggested changes, he will incorporate them into the draft document. The draft will be presented to the City Council at an upcoming Council meeting (likely in September); they may want to meet with this committee for further discussion. Miscellaneous Steven F. introduced Nicole Sanders who is interning with the City this summer. She will collect data for the communitywide carbon -footprint study. Nicole has a Masters in urban planning and is working on her thesis in climate change. Janice was recently in England where "fully developed communities" are building up instead of out. ClimateProtection/MeetingNotes070308doc Steve B. attended a Snohomish County Tomorrow meeting where they discussed contained communities. Rebecca lobbied for public lands in Olympia recently. Hopefully natural forests will receive more funding. Teresa reminded everyone of the Green Edmonds Festival coming September 13 as well as Green Week, which is the week before. Green Week is in conjunction with local merchants. A meeting on September 11 will show people how to be greener at home. Steve F. sat in on a "webinar" presented by the EPA on climate change and solid waste disposal. ClimateProtection/MeetingNotes070308doc
