Review of Action Plan 2. Next meeting date — A a.m., June 7. 2012 Meeting Minutes April 5, 2012 Attendees: Howard Chermak, Janice Freeman, Robert Freeman, Steve fisher, Carolyn Chapel, Sally Lider, Rob Chave, Richard Bisbee, Hank Landau, Jen Machuga, Laura Spehar, Jim Stevens, Cynthia Pruit Laura Spehar made a presentation on Eco Schools a. Westgate Elementary is the pilot school in the Edmonds School District b. Seven step framework. After seven steps are completed then they can apply for an award c. Three award levels. After a level is achieved they get funding from eco-school i. Westgate is currently at the bronze level. They plan to purchase rain barrels w/their award funding ii. Grant received was about $3,000 d. The program dovetails with WA green schools and more information can be found on the eco- schools website http://www.nwf.org/Global-Warming/School-Solutions/Eco-Schools- USA/About-Eco-Schools-USA.aspx i. Madrona and Maplewood are both certified WA green schools. Can do both programs and get certified by both e. Eco-Schools is a National Wildlife Federation program. All on-line. f. Superintendent Brossoit is champion of this program g. School decides which project to take on next w/their eco team Jen Machuga & Rob Chave presented the AWC Going Green Municipal Award — Sustaining Edmonds that they recently applied for a. Limited to things done in the past two years b. Benefit (award or not) illustrates what Edmonds has done c. Started w/summary of what City is doing d. Framework about what city is doing/what's been adopted/setting groundwork e. Focus on actions the city was doing to help city operations f. Council/boards/going towards paperless packets CPC- MeetingAgenda050312.doc g. City started a "Green Team". In the process of compiling a list of all green things the City is doing it was recommended that they apply for AWC award. h. Need to get information out to the community i. Mayor doing Comcast Newsmaker piece on this and Jim Steven's press release piece on energy conservation @ public works j. Will also be an article in the papers and a presentation at City Council United Methodist Church is hosting an Earth Day event on April 22 starting @ 10:30 am a. Everybody from this group is invited to attend b. Steve Fisher will be there c. Laura Spehar -- w/eco schools and EWHP d. Water theme e. Pastor's sermon that day will be on water 4. Discussed next step for committee is to come -up with a short list of what to do next a. Next meeting should be a discussion about our action plan Member Reports 1. Laura a. recommended a video series the the Sno-Isle library has called "Green Living Series" b. Edmonds in Bloom going green c. Tree Board will present Tree City USA designation at city council meeting d. Anything you want to get out to press let Laura know e. Starting Monday Laura will hosting "question of the week on the street" column for the Beacon 2. Richard Bisbee reported that the coal train issue will be open for scoping within the next month a. Strom Peterson planning to attend one of the hearings b. Hearings are quick turn -around —just find out the day before so need be prepared to act fast c. Richard will try to get a table at the Earth Day event @ United Methodist 3. Sally Lider reported that on May 5th the city will be having their Watershed Funfair from 11am - 4pm at Yost Park. Steve Fisher will be there with an array of items. Still looking for people who want booths / want to speak. 4. Steve Fisher will be presenting "Puget Sound Starts Here" at the Funfair. Month of May will be designated Puget Sound Starts Here month there will be a Mayoral proclamation at the May 1 City Council meeting 5. Robert Freeman asked that the agenda list any old business and new business that will be discussed at the meeting 6. Cynthia Pruitt a. Sent out info on go green conference to committee members http://seattle.gogreenconference.net/event details/ b. Also reported that "Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update" has been released and advised reviewing it 7. Jim Stevens is working w/Steve & Strom on a policy to ban polystyrene/non-compostable plastics in city facilities 8. Hank — Report "Preparing for Climate Change" released. Committee should go through report and see what is applicable to Edmonds. Get this on an upcoming agenda. Commitment in report to have State government help City's deal with this. By 2020 state will incur 10b a year if we don't do anything about climate change 9. Richard reported that there is an article in today's Herald regarding coal trains CPC- MeetingAgenda050312.doc
