He also would like to see if there is any reason for the greenhouse gas survey to be completed and reported on as well as updates on the ESCO progress. Subcommittee & Member Reports Item #6: Hank Landau commented on how the production of natural gas by some suppliers is losing money... Review of Agenda Val Stewart reviewed the agenda. She also announced that Carolyn Chapel had to resign from the committee and suggested that it would be nice to find a way to recognize Carolyn's involvement with the committee over the past several years. Discussion on Meeting Times Val suggested that meeting earlier might make it easier for staff. The group discussed options for meeting times and days and agreed to keep the meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 9:00am. Subcommittee Reports Jim Stevens reported for the "Edmonds Sustainability Heroes" subcommittee: - Jim and Hank interviewed Strom Peterson. They will contact My Edmonds News to see if they'll run the story. - Cynthia Pruitt and Val are also members of the subcommittee. - Their next interview will be Edmonds United Methodist Church. Rebecca Wolfe and Val are working on a schools subcommittee. Jen Machuga reported that the incentives subcommittee is getting back together with the main tasks of working on a "green" display and incentives for energy -efficient improvements. The committee discussed status of the subcommittees since some of the subcommittees were restructured and others stopped meeting. It was suggested that the subcommittees be called work groups or task groups. It was also suggested that the tasks of the subcommittees be re -focused to the four target areas that were identified at the end of last summer. Timeline of What the Committee/City Has Accomplished Val reviewed the committee's accomplishments and also reviewed the committee's mission statement. The committee should support the Mayor, staff, and Council in their priorities. Hank suggested that the committee is an advisory group to support the City and to offer suggestions. He also said that the City has made even more accomplishments than those listed. Presentation on Eco-Schools Audit Options Val explained the history of Eco-Schools (it was started in Europe in 1994 and brought to the U.S. in 2008). It is a very comprehensive program. Val discussed the benefits of the program, including financial savings to schools through energy improvements. There are six certified Eco-Schools in the county, one of which is Westgate Elementary School. There are seven paths to become an Eco-School. Val went through the Transportation and Energy audits as examples. CPC-MeetingAgenda130606.doc I Val and Rebecca are talking about how to get the program started at other schools in Edmonds. The great thing about the program is that kids can see concrete information on the benefits of conservation. Val and Rebecca were looking for the committee's approval for working on this. It was suggested that they speak with the school superintendent and to "Creating Community Connections." Mayor Earling asked if there was research on the target school age that has the most impact. He used the example of an educational program that Sound Transit did years ago and thought that it's possibly best to target elementary school age groups. The committee agreed that habits are formed at a young age, so elementary school is a good target. However, high school is also a good target age because those students are getting ready to go out into the community. Connecting with Verdant would be good for incorporating the health component of it all. Rebecca suggested looking at the website www.voicesfortheplanet.org. Miscellaneous Mayor Earling discussed the Strategic Plan and explained that certain issues are being assigned to groups, so there are possibly tasks from the Strategic Plan that this committee could work on. Janice Freeman shared that the Mayor presented the Proclamation for Earth Day 2013 to the group at a recent City Council meeting. CPC-MeetingAgenda130606.doc I
