C PC- M eeti n gAge nd a 140703 Mayor 1. Mayor Earling introduced new member Barbara Tipton. He also reported that Graham Marmion will be coming onboard in July. He is just finishing his degree at Western Washington. His resume was passed around to the group. Mayor expressed to the group that he would like them to be more visible to the public. He also expressed concern about the committee having too many ideas. His charge to the group was to focus on 2-3-4 doable issues, some short term, so we can get some notoriety in the public. Mayor Earling said this doesn't mean the group can't advocate for bigger issues. Cynthia explained that we would be talking about our priorities later in the meeting. Priorities 1. Brief overview about how we came to our priorities. Group members volunteered for priorities and it was decided that at each meeting we would take a chunk of time to report on their accomplishments and to ask for support if needed. Top priorities for this year: a. Outreach b. Sustainable heroes interviews c. Building upgrades d. Lifestyle changes , gardening 2. New member Barbara Tipton was added to the lifestyle priority Committee Reports 1. Lifestyle: Steve Fisher reported that he has been working with hauling companies, which have evolved over the years and now have teams of people who are outreach specialists who check on behavior changes in regards to increased recycling. The diversion of materials is expanding which results in more items being diverted from the landfills. Janice Freeman talked about how condos are years behind in recycling practices. Steve said he has been working on this and while King County is moving forward with mandating recycling practices for condos/apartments, Snohomish County is not quite there. He also said that he has been working on this in Edmonds for years but it is tough in areas that are already built out to find the space to do this. Barbara & Steve will get together before the next meeting and discuss how they will move forward. Hank Landau said that Edmonds United Methodist Church recently did a survey by paper and internet, with 158 respondents, regarding what the church is doing to be green and also what individuals are doing to be green. Survey was done because some people were leaving the Church because they felt the church was becoming too green. The results were evaluated last week and are on the Edmonds United Methodist church website. They showed most members supported the efforts to be "green" — this could be good background and starting point for the lifestyle team. 2. Sustainable Heroes: Haven't done any interviews lately and would appreciate input from the group on people they should interview. Pam Schuler of Walnut Street Coffee was recommended. Also recommended was Landau Associates. 3. Outreach: Jen Machuga reported that she and Steve Fisher have been working on a green business pledge. A press release went out last week and there was also an article in the newsletter. They made the pledge very simple, just 4 bullet points. To date they have 4 pledges. Val Stewart encouraged each member of the committee to get try to get one new business to pledge. Initial deadline is May 15th. Barbara Tipton suggested sending the information to the two Rotary groups. Steve will follow-up with this. 4. Building upgrades: Cynthia Pruitt said that she and Val Stewart will contact Jim Stevens regarding their willingness and ability to serve on the building upgrades committee (both were nominated C PC- M eeti n gAge nd a 140703 to this committee in absentia). Hank said that he would be seeing Howard and would talk with him about this and get back to Cynthia. Chair report 1. Val Stewart reported on the Sustainable Edmonds presentation at the Senior Center regarding climate change and what Edmonds can do. She recommends and encourages committee members to visit the website http://globalchange.gov/ and view the National Assessment that was the background for one of the presentations. Sustainable Edmonds will post all of these presentations on their website as well. 2. Cynthia Pruitt reported that the CPC is happy to have 2 new members. Val Stewart would like to see more young people join the group. Question was asked about whether or not we should look for another young person, group said yes. It was asked that each personally look for someone. Barbara Tipton asked about getting a student from Edmonds Woodway and said she would follow through with this. It was explained that a student from EW would fill the student rep. position on the committee. In an effort to make it easier for new members to attend the meetings Val Stewart recommended that in September we reevaluate our meeting time and think about changing it. 3. Cynthia Pruitt provided an article for the group from The Herald announcing Governor Inslee's new committee. She attended the Go Green Conference that week and was impressed with the consortium of King County cities working to become sustainable. 4. Rob Chave reminded everyone that the NWSEED volunteer kick-off meeting is tonight 5. Hank Landau reported that we have 2 solarization programs going on at the same time. Linda Irvin of NWSEED will work with Sunergize to see how they can work together 6. Bob Freeman asked everyone to keep in mind what the purpose of these committees are, i.e., a forum for Mayor's to work collaboratively with other Mayor's to affect change. Mayors should be using this collaborative forum to lobby Congress which is the best place to get funding for environmental projects. We should encourage our Mayor to push other Mayor's to take up these issues. 7. Val Stewart reported that there was an Edmonds home on the green home tour. Also that she is currently involved in the Citizen Action Training school and will need to do a project for this — she'II keep us up-to-date on what that project is. She asked if someone was willing to write an article on what the CPC has accomplished. Barbara Tipton said she would be willing to do that. 8. Cynthia stated that we seem to be using an hour and fifteen minutes for each meeting so maybe we should just plan to make this standard practice. Meeting adjourned @ 9:58 am Next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 4, 2014 C PC- M eeti n gAge nd a 140703
