Infusion of energy and action -oriented people on Board 6. Green resource room moving along 7. Interest in engaging students Report on Comp Plan Update from Val Stewart 1. Comp Plan is basis of much of City's actions. Update important. On fast timeline, to be completed mid-2015. Planning Board looked at Sustainability Element, with comments from Climate Protection Committee Members, is almost done with Housing Element, and is starting on the Land Use Element. 2. Input from Climate Protection Committee is appreciated. Hazard Mitigation planning, including sea level rise issues, is proposed as action step for Comp Plan update (in Sustainability Element). Sustainability is important framework for a range of issues. VISION 2040 provides good guidance for climate change protection. Growth is also to be provided for in the Comp Plan. Planning Board has adopted performance measurement for # of new housing units permitted annually. Now thinking ahead to land use, trees, and green infrastructure, as well as air quality. Val can provide drafts ahead to other Committee members. Member mentioned importance of balancing trees and solar opportunities. Kristiana mentioned that the historic preservation committee is tracking housing demolitions. Nominations for 2015 Co -Chairs 1. Val nominated Cynthia for co-chair next year. Shane Hope offered to co-chair or assist in other ways. Elections will be held in January 2015. Evaluation of 2014 and 2015 strategies 1. Cynthia reviewed results from the recent survey. For example, the top ranked action from Climate Action Plan is "community outreach". She asked attendees where they saw the greatest progress this year. 2. Jim: City's progress in replacing high-energy street lights with LED versions 3. Steve: Solarization program and green business pledge programs rolled out. About 30 green businesses now. 4. Jen: Info is posted on website and was noted in mayor's newsletter. 5. Jim: Solarization program going really well, as demonstrated by Sustainability Heroes interview. 6. Jen: Green Resource center at City Hall is being planned for. At the beginning of the year likely to be physical changes to accomplish this. 7. Cynthia: Let's brainstorm about what we would like to see accomplished in 2015. Responses included 8. Green Resource Room completed at City Hall. 9. Green business pledges doubled. 10. 4 Sustainability Heroes stories distributed. One key goal measured and reported on that makes sense for Edmonds. Allows excitement to build and get more progress; involve public and private. 11. Green building and sustainable development to be common vocabulary and not seen negatively by most people. 12. Poster contest for students --with good results and publicity around town. 13. Zero waste. Concept can be incorporated into Utilities Element of Comp Plan Update. Relates to Climate Change policy. Could include multifamily service. 14. Do news releases often to tell success stories and/or write columns for news media. Get the word out to the public about the good things being done! CPC- MeetingAgenda150108 Brainstorming on how to not be effective: ❑ Do nothing. ❑ Don't tell success stories. Solarize South County program results 1. Steve Fisher reported on 8 workshops, 130 people attended. 24 contracts signed, of which 14 are locations in Edmonds; others are from Brier, MLT, Woodway, and Lynnwood. Number of KW installed so far under this program: 34.2 KW. Report on Marsh Tour 1. Val Stewart reported on Marsh Tour that took place on Oct. 4. About 50 attendees. Education focus was about how near -shore environment affects salmon. Tour was very successful. Video is available and a link can be sent to Committee members. Subcommittee reports I. Sustainable Heroes: Interview of Dave Kendall last week. Story to be published by next week. 2. Lifestyle: Working on draft language for Comp Plan Utilities Element update re: waste reduction. 3. Community Outreach: Green business pledges discussed earlier. 4. Buildings: Reviewed Climate Change Plan goals. Items need updating, for example, regarding tax credits. Will be making recommendations for revisions. Announcements 1. Recognize we are making progress. 2. Pacific Coast Collaborative is working on advancing climate change policy --regionally and globally. 3. Unity Church is having meeting that focuses on coal train concerns.
