Meeting Minutes
January 5, 2017
In Attendance: Larry Pierce, Steve Fisher, Cynthia Pruitt, Hank Landau, Rob Chave, Jen Machuga,
Josh Thompson, Bill Phipps (Edmonds Tree Board), Gayle Leborg (Interfaith Climate Action),
Dawna Lahti (Holy Rosary), Gayla Shoemake, Councilperson Diane Buckshnis
Meeting Start: The meeting was called to order at 8:45 AM
Tree Board Joint Meeting: Cynthia and Larry both met recently with a few Edmonds Tree Board
members to discuss how the CPC and Tree Board could coordinate efforts. Bill Phipps from the
Tree Board mentioned that it would be good to have an Edmonds educational evening for "the
Right Tree in the Right Place". There may be an opportunity for both groups to share a
table/booth at one or more of the Summer Market Saturdays.
Taming Bigfoot Effort: Steve introduced the "Taming Bigfoot" game developed and
implemented in Port Townsend to "gamify" carbon reduction efforts. Hank went on to explain
that the game establishes community teams that measure a baseline carbon use, and then
winners are announced according to various reduction metrics. Hank and Steve thought that
this may be appropriate for Edmonds and the CPC, and that the awards ceremony could be an
opportunity for involvement with the mayor and good public outreach for the CPC.
Gayle, Dawna, and Gayla were at the meeting lending some support for the game since their
Interfaith group was given a presentation by one of the creators recently. This group was
already discussing a version of the game that would possibly take in more of the whole
community and was eager to have some participation at the city level.
The group discussed how this can fit into Edmonds, how volunteers could be found in different
groups and from different religious institutions. Practical considerations: Education is the goal,
diversity within groups will be important to maximize educational opportunities; who else to
involve?; Cynthia asked if we can plan a 90-minute meeting in February with CPC, Council, and
other committees. Cynthia and Steve will look into this possibility and organize if possible. This
would be an organizational meeting to define the "how".
2016 Accomplishments: Cynthia asked CPC members to list 2016 CPC accomplishments and set
priorities for 2017. Accomplishments listed are: sustainability heroes, WWU involvement, Zero
Waste Resolution passed by council, meeting with Tree Board, support for the Bike 2 Health
program, Green Business canvassing, Green Resource Room support, made some movement on
the Climate Action Plan.
WWU Collaboration: Steve said that the Western Washington University students from the
campus' Sustainable Planning Studio gave a presentation in Edmonds on their research and
findings related to zero waste. There was a very healthey discussion that followed the formal
presentations. Final reports have been submitted to the city and council, and these can be
found on the city website. There was interest in having some of these students repeat their
presentation directly at some upcoming Council meeting. Hank mentioned that on January 13,
three groups of Western students that investigated the Edmonds Marsh and stormwater issues
will give presentations.
Subcommittee Reports:
Sustainability Heroes: The "Students Saving Salmon" group at Edmonds-Woodway High School
is scheduled for an interview.
Green Resource Room: This committee is no longer active, its goals accomplished.
Zero Waste: Subcommittee attended the recent Western student presentation.
Green Business: One more business pledge was received.
Future Agenda: Possible topics: Edmonds Bike Group; co-chair elections; define 2017
objectives; go through the Climate Action Plan to align CPC goals and decide any changes;
define criteria for Sustainability Heroes (Steve looked at solar installation permit holders in the
city, and may be able to reach out to some who would agree to be interviewed, but privacy
issues are important); Gayla had an interest on tours of raingardens.
Announcements: The Tree Board will meet tonight at 6pm. All are welcome.
Adjourn: The meeting was adjourned at 9:56 AM.
Next Meeting: May 4, 2017
