Edmonds Climate Goals Project presentation — Targets and Policy Gap memorandum discussion (presented by Mark Johnson and Joshua Proudfoot) Continuation of the ongoing Climate Goals project was presented via video con ferencing. Mark Johnson led the initial part of the meeting by showing a similar version of the PowerPoint he presented at the previous evening's Edmond City Council meeting. The Council meeting had 5 of 7 members in attendance, with Mayor Earling also not in attendance. The presentation was the formal report to Council on the consultant's greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory portion of the overall Climate Goals project tasks. The presentation also touched on the need to set targets for GHG reduction which was what Mark wanted to offer for discussion with the committee. Starting with a chart that showed target years in this century and the variables between different capped temperature gains, plus bringing in the implications across the globe in regards to wealth, consumption, and responsibility, it became quite apparent how daunting the task to curb temperature rise has become. Another graph illustrated temperature levels if continuing on a business -as -usual trajectory, or if/when current national plans are put in play or if the global community chose those measures designed to lead to more rapid decreases in temperature. Lifestyle changes, the impact of offsets, and sequestration were all discussed with Joshua contributing several measures to ponder. Hank asked and received clarification on the distinction of the Project's deliverables, i.e. the GHG inventory, the Policy Memo and the Policy Gap Analysis, since there was a lot of data to digest. Mark relayed that the Council seemed quite engaged and sobered by the presentation and agreed that education was paramount for the community to embrace action. He gathered some feedback on what pieces of the presentation would be the effective to show at the Climate Goals Project Open House at City hall on the evening of January 17. Cynthia had made available Fast Facts she had gathered. Mark said at the next CPC meeting the committee would be briefed on the tool the consultants will help cull through roughly Soo GHG reduction measures. The committee will have the opportunity to use the tool to start on that path. The City is creating a designated Climate Goals Project web page that will feature all the information made public so far and be updated as the consultants continue their work. Meeting Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 10:05 am.
