Roll Call: Call to order at 6:01 p.m. Maria Montalvo excused. 2. Approval of Agenda: The agenda approved by consensus. 3. Approval of Meeting Summary of September 5, 2018: Summary minutes approved as submitted by consensus. 4. Public Comment: Nancy Smith and Shiva Riddell members of the local Baha'i community extended an invitation to the Commission to attend a November 10 event. Ardeth Weed stated that she had been doorbelling for a state initiative and was accompanied by a high school student earning community service hours. 5. Grand Alliance Pro@ect Discussion — Partnership/Communications/Grants Sub -group: Diana introduced this item for discussion. David Ortiz was in attendance representing the Communities of Color Coalition. This is a brainstorming session to try to narrow down ideas for the project. After considerable discussion there were 12 topics: 1. Diversity commissions summit; 2. Restaurant/passport with businesses; 3. Place -making event/project; 4. Sit-down communal meal(s); 5. 4th of July International Food Event; 6. PR: Ads, articles, channel 21; 7. Sticker (earned); 8. Everybody says "Hello" campaign; 9. Night market; 10. Murals demonstrating diversity; 11. Art Walk diversity theme month; 12. Write your story/story wall. After voting by the Commission the top three topics are 1. Write your story/story wall; 2. Night Market; 3. Everybody says hello campaign. The Sub -group will meet to discuss the top three topics and bring back to next Commission meeting for further discussion. 6. Update from the City: Patrick updated on a question from Councilmember Teitzel regarding restrictions on ADA parking spaces in downtown area. State law is a minimum of allowed 4 hours. Sensitivity is of concern. Patrick will research and bring back for discussion in November. APPROVED Meeting Summary Diversity Commission October 3, 2018 Page 1 7. Washington State Voting Rights Act: Patrick updated that Councilmember Tibbott is not asking more from the Diversity Commission at this time. Councilmember Tibbott plans to discuss with Council and at 2019 retreat regarding setting up task force to further explore the options. Will keep Commission advised on process. 8. Discussion on Closed Captioning in Public Venues — next steps: Patrick updated that this will be discussed at DEMA meeting this coming Friday, October 5 and then BID meeting a week from Thursday. Will present concept and ask them to start discussion. 9. Commissioner Terms and Student Representation: It is recommended to extend student representative opening until filled. Diana, Donnie and Sarah's terms are up at the end of this year and it is requested that if they want to be reappointed to please send an email to Cindi by the end of October. 10. 2018 Sub -Groups: Policy: Recommended some minor changes in the proposal as discussed. A presentation to the City Council is scheduled for 10/16/18. It was agreed by consensus to move the policies forward with minor changes to present to City Council. Events: Film Series starts on October 20. Press release was issued this week. Patrick passed out posters. King 5 will be doing a story on the first movie in October. It was discussed incorporating a movie about homelessness such as "The Florida Project". Commissioners are needed for movie hosts. Diana volunteered for October 20, Sarah volunteered for November 17 movie. World Cafe: October 13, 10 — noon, Plaza Room has been booked for this event. Adrienne, Sarah, Pat, Misha, Ed, Donnie, Anabel will attend. Topics were discussed. Will make changes and finalize questions. Budget for event is approved by consensus to spend up to $600 on the event for advertising and refreshments. 11. New Business, Commissioner's Corner:. Diana spoke about equity and inclusion event on October 24 at Meadowdale High School. She will be facilitating two sessions that are modeled after the World Caf6 and would love to have some help. Adrienne reminded Commission about the Council volunteer reception on Tuesday, October 9. Adiourn: 8:01 PM — Next regular meeting: November 7, 2018, 6 PM at Edmonds Senior Center.
