Commissioner's Corner: MLK Jr. event at the ECA Adjourn — 8:OOPM Next regular meeting: Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 6 PM Guiding Principles To ensure we meet our responsibilities as a Commission, we agree to: • start and end our meetings on time • demonstrate our respect for our fellow Commissioners, the City of Edmonds, and the citizens we represent by: being present, being prepared, actively listening, participating in meetings, completing our individual assignments, and holding ourselves accountable • "step up and step back" • establish goals and action plans that are results oriented • establish subcommittees as needed • engage in courageous, honest, and open dialogue when faced with difficult issues or questions • utilize the "Ouch Rule" (assume positive intent; resist the temptation to be offended) • embrace the education opportunities presented through the Commission meetings • strive to make decisions by consensus. In a case where consensus cannot be reached after a reasonable attempt has been made, the Chairperson may call for a majority vote. Roll Call: Call to order at 6:00 p.m. Councilmember Adrienne Fraley-Monillas, ex officio COMMISSIONERS ABSENT Donnie Griffin ELECTED OFFICIALS AND STAFF PRESENT Patrick Doherty, ED/CS Director Cindi Cruz, ED/CS Program Coordinator 2. Approval of Agenda: The agenda approved by consensus. Approval of Meeting Summary of December 5, 2018: Summary minutes approved as submitted by consensus. 4. Public Comment: Royce Napolitano from reSound thanked the Diversity Commission for the grant award on November 7 to help fund the performance event on January 27. He provided background on the program "Let Justice Roll Down" and invited the Commission to attend performance at Trinity Lutheran Church. Apple Catha, resident and business owner and also on board of Ed! is attending to know more about the work of the Commission. She would like to encourage collaboration between Ed! and Diversity Commission. Sharon Heine is a new resident to Edmonds and is interested in the work of the Commission. She attended the World Cafe and she was very impressed with that event. She has experienced personal discrimination and had hoped there would be more interaction with individual commissioners similar to the World Caf6 event. The Commission individually described their personal diversity and why they were on the Commission. 5. Update from the City: Adrienne talked to City attorney about placing an alternate position on the Commission but it would require a code change. City Council interviewed last night for youth commission and have two youth who may be interested in the Diversity Commission student representative position. The information has been forwarded to these two youth. Patrick updated the commission on incident over the weekend of hate flyers distributed in local neighborhoods in addition to other Puget Sound areas. Anabel was interviewed on King 5 with a response on behalf of the Commission that focused on the message left by this particular group and how it did not meet the values of the City of Edmonds. Position of coordinator/assistant for the diversity commission was approved for the 2019 budget and will provide someone up to 40 hours per month. This was Misha's former position at 10 hours per month. Edmonds was selected as the state's first Creative District designation. Senior Center will be available thru May and the Commission will probably need to meet in the Brackett Room at City Hall until completion of new facility. Film series is resuming on January 19 and Dean Olson will be the representative from the Commission. 6. New Business, Commissioner's Corner: Dean reported for Donnie regarding event to be held on Monday, January 21, the day honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at ECA and would like to have commissioners attend and help man tables. Sarah advised the morning program starts at 10 a.m. and evening event starts at 7:30 p.m. and will provide information and posters for film series. Mindy hoped to put together events on a flier for distribution as a calendar of community events. 7. 2019 Sub -Groups: Review sub -group membership and structure. Pat led this discussion. Partnerships/Communications/Grants: purpose to partner with other organization and effective, meaningful communication with media. Commissioners: Sarah, Dean, Mindy. City Policy: purpose to look at City policy regarding training for employees and reach out to City Council quarterly. Commissioners: Maria, Anabel, Donnie. Events: purpose to plan films series, world cafe, youth forum, Fourth of July parade and special events. Commissioners: Ed, Pat, Brian. Sub -groups need to pick a lead, they can e-mail each other to set meeting times. Set goals for the year. At next meeting set retreat date. Mindy mentioned on behalf of economic diversity there is an affordable housing meeting at Swedish Hospital on Thursday night.
