Staff Liaison: Carolyn LaFave Guests / Public Comment: Welcome to Patrick Sweeney Agenda: moved and seconded Minutes: moved and seconded Treasurer's Report: • Current balances are private funds-$671.08, public funds $1031.09. No change from last month. Chair's Report: None. PR Report: • The deadline for the student applications was extended to April 17. There was a vote by email. • More recruiting ideas were discussed. One of the applicant's mom is contacting Kings; Iyoko contacted Yoshi; Michele F talked with the Japanese teacher at Einstein/Shorewood in Shoreline. • St. Luke's and Brighton were mentioned as possibilities. Contacting social studies teachers, counselors and clubs in high schools. • Karyn emailed posters to other teachers. • There have been articles in the Beacon, MyEdmondsNews. Staff Report: None Student Representative Report: None Official Correspondence: • Iyoko received an email from Tamami Yokoyama, from the Hekinan Sister City Association confirming the student travel dates. Edmond's students will arrive in Hekinan on 7/21 meaning that their departure date is 7/20. Hekinan students will be in Edmonds from 8/6-8/19. • The group will consist of ten junior high students, five high school students and two chaperones. Old Business Update on Commissioner Recruitment: Patrick shared a little about himself and then stepped out of the room while the commission talked about his interview. There was a unanimous vote to put him forward to the next step, recommendation to the Mayor. Student Delegation Interviews Update: • Karyn and Robert Allen interviewed the first seven applicants, all boys. They were impressed with their maturity and have no concerns at this time. They are ages 14-17 years old (8th-121h grade). • An 8th student, Cate Montgomery will be interviewed on Thursday, March 26. Interviews for new applicants will be done as needed. • Orientation will be in the Brackett Room, from 6:30-8:00 and the dates have been set as follows: 4/16, (early May TBD), 5/21, 6/11 and 7/7 (time will be 6:30-8:30 and will include the host family orientation). Student Recruiting for 2015: See PR Report above AET Planning Update: • Michele F updated the job description. • Carolyn has posted the job description on the website, Channel 21, college websites (including UW, Western Washington, Seattle U, SPU). • The deadline for applications is April 10. Red Onion Fundraiser: Still scheduled for 5/6/15. No update available. Cultural Event: There is no news on the Arista fundraiser. However, Pam is going to meet with Carolyn to define how fundraising money can be used, deposited and distributed. New Business Student Delegation Flight Information: • We are still negotiating flights and cost. Currently, Korean Air is holding 20 seats for a flight. No deposit is required at this time. The current cost is $1651 and the flight has a stop in Korea. • The other flight being considered is a Delta Flight which has a stop in Hawaii. The current cost is $1554. They require $100 deposit three months ahead. Mariners: Marlene will look into setting the date for the Mariner's game. Suggested dates are 8/10 or 8/11. She will also inquire about parking for the van. May meeting: Due to the Memorial Day Holiday, there was discussion as to when to have the meeting. This will be decided at the next meeting. Commissioner News: Former commissioner, Vera Papageorgiou is in intensive care. Rita shared information with us and she will send a card on behalf of the commissioners.
