• Pam shared an August 2016 letter regarding the retirement of Akira Tsuzuki. The new president
of the Hekinan Sister City Association is Mr. Isao Kimbara.
• lyoko has received correspondence from the Hekinan Board of Education discussing the starting
date for the new ALT. They want the new start date of April to remain in future ALT contracts.
Continuing Business:
• Calendar Planning Aug -Nov: (see attached calendar) Pam proposed that beginning this month,
we publish the current month and future month ESCC activity/event calendar on page 2 of the
agenda.
• The Edmonds student delegation will give a short presentation at the City Council meeting on
Tuesday, October 11.
• Student Representative presentation: The commission would like to approve Dar Williams as the
new student rep but at this time, this can't happen because his residence is Lynnwood.

According to the city code, he must be an Edmonds resident. The Mayor will be talking with the
President of the City Council to see if this can be amended. If it can't be amended, then we will
offer Dar a place as a full commissioner.
• ALT Status/Michelle Rockstead: Michelle has turned in her application. On Wednesday, her
reference letters will be in and the application will be complete.
New Business:
• Surveys: Michele F has four different editions on Survey Monkey.
• New Poster: Michelle Rockstead created an amazing new poster promoting the summer student
exchange program. (see attached) The commission approved it after the dates for application
deadlines were made. Michelle will email it to Carolyn in a zip file.
• Commissioner outreach: We discussed ways to recruit new commissioners to fill current
vacancies. We will reach out to former chaperones and host families.
• School outreach:
✓ Lunch and Learns: Pam said letters have been sent to all local high schools, middle
schools, K-12 programs and private schools. So far, King's school has said yes for
November. Pam also asked that we purchase a dolly to transport materials.
✓ Elementary visits: Marlene has asked Carolyn to edit and approve a letter to be taken to
elementary schools to give information for the presentations.
Next Meeting: October 24, 2016, 7pm at the Frances Anderson Center, Room 123.
Adjournment: 8:15 pm
