The March 2012 minutes were approved with no corrections. There was one important public attendee, Barbara Tipton, former Edmonds Tree Board member and instrumental participant in our Tree City USA application and award. The Tree City USA Award was officially presented to the Board by Linden Lampman-Mead, Urban and Community Forest Specialist, Washington Department of Natural Resources. On behalf of the city, we received a plaque, a Tree City flag, and a road sign proclaiming our Tree City status. Arborist Dave Timbrook received a Tree City baseball cap. Edmonds will add yearly `leaves' to an additional wood plaque as we maintain our status. Linden also gave a slide presentation on the role, importance and tasks of tree boards. Topics covered included: • The Importance of Tree Boards • The Roots of Success ("be visible —be essential") • Why Goals and Objectives? • What is an Annual Plan of Work? • Why are Annual Plans of Work Essential for Success? • Identify Tree Tasks Needed to Accomplish Goals • Sample Annual Plan of Work for a Small Community • Developing Timelines • On the Ground Planning • Implementation • Evaluation Remember: Tree boards exist to educate and advocate. There is no standard formula to success. Set reasonable goals and objectives. Finish what you start. Be proud of small victories. Public education is ongoing. This is time-consuming. Have fun! Linden also left some informational handouts and has additional brochures available which Rebecca Wolfe offered to pick up. Unfinished business: The Tree City Award will be presented by the Board to Mayor Earling and City Council very soon at a date not yet set. Laura Spehar was nominated and accepted as Vice Chair. Arbor Day Planner will tentatively be Rebecca, with citizen Barbara Tipton's help. Susan Paine offered be in charge of Code Ideas and Development. It was determined that our meeting date will need to remain the first Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm. In May and June, the various city departments with tree maintenance issues will be presenting information about their tree -related concerns to the Board. New Business: In conjunction with Community Tree Management Institute, Anna and Sandy Seligmiller will be working on class projects directly related to, and beneficial to, the Board's activities. Anna plans to create an initial Canopy Assessment of Edmonds and Sandy will be working on developing a Heritage or Significant Tree Program. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.
