Meeting Notes
March 3, 2016
The Edmonds Citizens' Tree Board Meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chair Steve
Hatzenbeler in the council chambers' Jury Room, 250 5th Avenue North, Edmonds, WA.

1. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Hatzenbeler called the meeting to order at 6:00.
2. ROLL CALL/INTRODUCTIONS
Doug Petersen, new Tree Board member was introduced
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
All approved
4. AUDIENCE COMMENTS
There were no guests
5. APPROVAL OF MEETING NOTES
Barbara Chase will send February and March meeting notes to members for review. No
meeting notes were available to review this meeting.
6. Kernen Lien , City staff member reported on the Critical Areas Ordinance.
Tree Board is interested in tree -related issues in the CAO. Kernen said that there are
allowed activities such as removing hazardous trees. Removing alders may be allowed.
There may be changes to size of trees. Native vegetation plan is part of the critical areas.
The plan should be done by June to avoid losing funding.
OLD BUSINESS
2016 events calendar
a. Barb Durr discussed the May 5 event with Cass Turnbull. Her topic will be The
Seven Myths of Site Selection and Care of Trees. There will be refreshments.
Tree related handouts including our October 15 Arbor Day event will be available.
The budget is $450. Crane Stavig will help Barb Durr. Barb D gave members a list of
different areas of publicity to be done in late March.
b. October 15 will be our major Arbor Day/Tree City USA event. Event Chair, Jed
Marshall will meet with Rich Lindsay to start planning discussions.
c. There was no report on the 5t" Ave. tree replacement (contact is Steve) or
information table at the market (contact is Barb Chase)
Other old business:
a. Corpus mas tree will be featured in My Edmonds News. Doug Petersen is interested
in helping with tree articles.
b. Barbara also reported that the Heritage Tree program is not feasible to pursue at this
time, but possibly a tree walk brochure similar to what City of Snohomish has done
will be a good future project.
c. Micki McNaughton, Special Project Manager, Washington State Department of
Natural Resources, will talk to some tree board members on March 25. She has
information about tree related programs throughout the state.
8. NEW BUSINESS
a. Tree projects: Barbara Durr reported on possible tree projects. Edmonds School
District is interested in a school project. Arborist and school rep will meet.
b. Mayor's Edmonds Climate Protection Committee
Jed Marshall and Barbara Durr attended the March meeting. Steve Fisher, the city
recycling expert is on committee. Zero waste is a goal. Rain gardens are an
important goal.
c. Tree Board annual report: Chair Steve will present at City Council in March (date
to be finalized). He will talk about numerous topics including budget, the need for
more staff involvement and ideas for the Urban Forestry Management plan. Barbara
Chase will give brief rundown on 2016 events.
d. Tree City USA Board members received a copy of the 2015 Tree City USA
application. The city exceeded the goal for money spent on tree related projects.
e. New board members Tree Board welcomed Doug Petersen. Kimberly Bailey will be
confirmed and attend April meeting.
9. TREE BOARD MEMBERS COMMENTS
a. Diane Buckshnis, City Council liaison, commented on importance of enjoyable
events. Adopt a Park may be a future project.
b. Steve Hatzenbeler offered his services to make it easier to use the Tree Board site.
ADJOURNMENT
The Edmonds Citizens' Tree Board adjourned at 8:00.
