Meeting Notes
June 2, 2016
The Edmonds Citizens' Tree Board Meeting was called to order at 6:00 in the council
chambers' Jury Room, 250 5t" Avenue North, Edmonds, WA.

1. CALL TO ORDER
Steve Hatzenbeler called the meeting to order at 6:00
2. ROLL CALL/INTRODUCTIONS
New Tree Board member, Bill Phipps was introduced. Bill replaces Crane Stavig.
Crane and Rene Travis (alternate) are no longer on the Tree Board.
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
The agenda was approved

5. APPROVAL OF MEETING NOTES
April 28 meeting notes were approved
6. OLD BUSINESS
a. The Tree Board Thursday May 5, 2016 event was judged successful. Cass Turnbull of
Plant Amnesty spoke about the "Seven Myths of Site, Selection and Care of Trees". We
had about 40 people attend from 7:00-9:00 in the City Council chambers. Refreshments
were served.
b. The Tree Board University online program is encouraged. It would help us in our pursuit
of the Tree City USA Growth Award.
c. Vivian Olson shared info on the 4t" Grade Foresters national program, which provides
sapling trees to many 4t" grade students around the country. Diane suggested that the
Tree Board write a letter to the School District to provide additional background on the
program and improve educational outreach to the students and their families about the
trees.
7. NEW BUSINESS
a. We discussed planning for the Arbor Day event to be held on October 15.
b. Denise Nelson, in Development Services, is the new Tree Board administrative support.
c. Meeting on site on Main St. with Rich Lindsay is recommended. This would not be
replacing the Tree Board regular meeting.
d. Tree Board note taker, Barbara Chase, would like to have help in taking notes. Vivian
Olson volunteered for August. Others are encouraged to take notes in the future.
e. The Tree Board needs to plan for a place at the Museum Garden Market in July.
8. TREE BOARD MEMBERS COMMENTS
Barbara Chase's series on Good Urban Trees featuring Alternatives to Leyland Cypress
was on My Edmonds News April 25, 2016.
9. PRESENTATION:
Attorneys Patricia Taraday and Rosa Fruehling Watson gave a presentation/ training about
our obligations relating to the Open Public Meetings Act and the Public Records Act. We
were cautioned that personal emails which contain Tree Board related content could be
considered public record. The City Attorney should be contacted if there is a question.
10. ADJOURNMENT
The Edmonds Citizens' Tree Board adjourned at 7:30
