6. OLD BUSINESS/DISCUSSION
We reviewed the Tree Board website's Description, Goals, and Background. Some of the board felt a
mission statement may be a better way of communicating the Tree Board's goals and aspirations.
We considered whether or not a "Mission Statement" was appropriate to add or replace the existing
content. Diane offered to work on a succinct Mission Statement and bring it to an upcoming board
meeting.

Tree ID Tags:
Bill will be posting the downtown tree identification tags in the next few days. He is working on
obtaining stickers with the new Tree Board logo to supplement the existing laminated ID tags.
Edmonds Market Tree Board Table:
Barbara is struggling to find small trees for our free giveaway at the September Edmonds Market.
She believes vine maples are available from the Snohomish Conservation District; however, Rich
Lindsay had at one point expressed some concern about vine maples. Rich commented that he does
not have a problem with the Tree Board giving away vine maples, and the Board agreed Barbara
should secure 50-100 vine maples for the market giveaway, depending on what is available and
affordable within the project budget.
The Board approved a $300 budget for purchasing trees for the September Edmonds Market
giveaways. Moved by Frank; 2nd by Vivian; passed unanimously.
Edmonds Market Tree Board table date: preferred 9/22 or 9/29. Barbara will contact the Edmonds
Market to secure a table spot.
Edmonds in Bloom, July 14:
Gail reported that she and Suzanne will take care of setting up and cleaning up, and Tree Board
Student Rep Leslie Smith will attend the walk-through on July 14.
Arbor Day:
The Tree Board lead for this event is Vivian. Rich reported that there is less than a 2,000 square foot
area to be planted with trees and shrubs. Some neighbors have expressed concern about large trees
blocking solar access, so Rich said the planting plan will be adapted to that. Preferred date is
October 6. There will be approximately 20 additional people needed for the event to help with digging
holes and planting; Rich is going to contact the Scouts who have helped with previous events.
Web Page:
Archived Agendas and Minutes link on the website doesn't go to the correct place and this should be
corrected or deleted. The tree graphic at the top of the "Tree Board Resources" page is not clear and
should be deleted. Diane offered to contact Denise or Jana to have these revisions made. We would
like to get the "Before you Grab that Chainsaw" brochure posted on the website; however, the layout
needs to be slightly revised in order to get the correct arrangement on a web page, and live links
need to be added. We will wait on this until it is determined who will get the contract to help the Tree
Board later in 2018.
Trees for Small Spaces brochure:
Suzanne has put together a revised draft after input from some Tree Board members. She will add
the Tree Board logo, incorporate some publishing/formatting revisions, and send out a pdf to the
Board for review.
UFMP:
Diane said the UFMP will be re -worked. It is expected to come back to the City Council on August 7.
The City Council may send it back to the Tree Board and Planning Board if it isn't already routed to
them.
Tree Board budget:
Diane offered to check on current status of the Tree Board's budget to determine if expenses such as
the purchase of additional "Before you Grab that Chainsaw" brochures can be done this year or if
they need to wait until 2019; and also to determine how much will be available for the Arbor Day
event.

7. NEW BUSINESS
Redwood tree project:
Bill reported that the Redwood tree project is pretty far-reaching. There are 100 large cloned
Redwood trees being moved from Michigan as part of the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive. There
area also 10,000 Sequoia seedlings that they want to be planted in groves, as well as 1,000
Redwood saplings that will be brought to the Pacific Northwest. Bellevue is planning to plant 2,500 of
the seedlings. There is an opportunity for other agencies/municipalities to obtain up to approximately
5,000 of the seedlings and approximately 500 of the saplings that will be advertised soon. Diane
offered to check with Parks Director Carrie Hite and Parks Manager Rich Lindsay on their level of
interest.
