6. OLD BUSINESS
- Arbor Day Planting Event on Sat Oct 6th- Vivian made a motion to spend up to $75 on refreshments
for the Arbor Day Planting Event volunteers. It was seconded by Barbara but Gail suggested we
discuss it before we vote as she did not think it was enough. After discussion, Gail moved that we
amend the motion to be up to $100 for refreshments. It was seconded by Bill and unanimously
passed. Bill, Gail, Susan, Vivian and maybe Barbara will be able to attend the event. Rich said that
his staff (Debra and Jesse) will have the plantings in place when we arrive and will have the tent and
table set up. Gail and Vivian will be there before the 10 am start to set up the snacks and coffee.
- Farmers' Market on Sat, Sep 22nd- Barbara recapped the event which was a success on every
level. It was evident from comments that the tree tag project Bill pulled off this summer is a real
positive for the Tree Board's public awareness. We discussed the value of being near the Master
Gardener's booth (let's make the request for that set up again in the future) and the value of giving
away the bigger trees versus the saplings. It seems that although the latter (bigger trees) had been
our backup plan, that it worked out well and that we may want repeat that approach in the future.
- UFMP- No update as housing plan front and center for the City right now
- Tree Brochure- The Watershed consultant Kyle Braun was unable to make the meeting due to
illness but will be sending Suzanne's "Small Tree" Brochure as updated (with our past edits and
"found" tree specie photos) via email in the next few days. Steve is going to contact Kyle to comment
about one of the photos in the last version (which had two different trees in a photo where it would
ideally only have the one we were featuring).
7. NEW BUSINESS
-Partnership with the Mayor's Climate Protection Committee was discussed. While we thought we
should leave the relationship loose, we obviously have shared interests and will be sharing info with
and support to each other. Lisa Conley (of the Mayor's CPC) plans to join us at the planting event.
8. TREE BOARD IDEAS AND COMMENTS
-Barbara Chase recapped recent visits to 1) a special care facility where Leyland Cypress had been
planted on all sides of the building and 2) a nursery where she saw a sign for Leyland Cypress that
did not include the info about how huge it gets over time (just said "20 feet in 10 years"). These
prompted her query about whether or not it would be appropriate to extend Tree Board outreach to
nurseries and landscaping companies and developers. One of many ideas discussed was stocking
our brochures and suggested tree lists at nurseries (both "to use" and "avoid" lists- and what
circumstances influence which list it ends up on) for shoppers to use to guide their buying decisions.
Rich Lindsay thinks that Jeannie McConnell would be the person to ask about whether or not the City
already has lists like this). Doug has a relationship with people at one of the nurseries and he will
have a conversation with them about the best way to approach outreach to them. This nursery/
landscaping company/ developer outreach may be something that we incorporate into our action plan
for the new year (which is rapidly approaching!). Doug asked the board members to be thinking of
this and other things we may want to do next year and bring for discussion to the next two meetings.
-Suzanne may want to write a short article for local news dealing with "Don'ts for trees".
-Suzanne also shared that she had been given thought to the organization and improvement of our
Tree Board website. She suggested that we add tabs that are more specific, like "prune", "select",
"plant", "protect" that would then have resources that related to those tabs (instead of having all
under "resources"). Links to Barbara's articles, u-tube videos and our brochures could all be
accessed there. There was discussion and a general positive consensus. Doug asked Suzanne to
bring some of these ideas in writing to the meeting next month. She agreed to do so.
9. ADJOURNMENT
It was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting at 7:20PM. Next meeting will be held on
Thursday Nov 1, 2018.
