City of Edmonds Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department PRESENT: Tanya Sharp Pat Oneill STAFF AUDIENCE Marni Muir Isabella Wilhelm, student Frances Chapin Rhonda Soikowski representative Ashley Song Excused: Beverly Shaw Starkovich; Lesly Kaplan The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by Tanya Sharp, Chair INTRODUCTIONS — MINUTES — Approval of April 1, 2019 minutes, Oneill Moved and Muir Seconded, Approved. Retreat Minutes April 24, Soikowski Moved with corrections and Oneill Seconded, Approved. REPORTS - A. Creative Programs Concerts / Sign-up — Commissioners reviewed the sign-up sheets and filled in the blanks. Commissioners will make a brief introduction at Hazel Miller concerts if they are attending. After discussion Soikowski Moved and Sharp Seconded that the introduction for each concert include language acknowledging traditional Coast Salish lands, Approved. Lodging Tax Award Recommendations — Sharp asked for up to three Commissioners to serve on the review committee which will meet prior to the June EAC meeting. Oneill and Soikowski volunteered. Recommendations will be approved at the June meeting and forwarded to the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC). Discussion about the awards, criteria and purpose, followed. On the Fence — Commissioners reviewed a proposal for a yarn installation. Muir Moved and Song Seconded Approval for the installation to be scheduled on the Civic fence, Approved. Commissioners were encouraged to reach out to any other artists who might be interested. 4. Partnership Programs — Oneill and Sharp reported on the Best of the Fest program with Children's films at ECA (EAC sponsored the free participation workshop); Soikowski commented very positively on the final program (Coast Salish drumming and dance) for Music at the Library; and other discussion followed of other programs. 5. Creative District — Song reported on the first meeting of the CD Advisory Committee and noted that branding is one of the milestones. The need for better photographs showing people in Edmonds for use in marketing was mentioned. Chapin and Song talked about the meeting schedule and next steps. 6. Retreat —Sharp and Soikowski asked for Commissioner follow-up thoughts after the Retreat discussions. Commissioners agreed that it would be valuable to have a further 3 hour mini -retreat focused on practical applications and to discuss different viewpoints on what we are already doing, Edmonds Arts Commission Minutes - 5/6/2019 2 not necessarily increasing the scope of activities. A date in the first two weeks of September would be preferred. B. Capital Projects C. Funding & Administration STAFF REPORT— Chapin and Sharp reported on the Gateway Sign presentation for City Council. Chapin also brought up the schedule for student representative selection.
