WiFi hot spot and Logo The youth commission may invest in WiFi hot spot if WiFi does not start working in room 123. this hot spot could also be used at different events, forums, and activities of the youth commission. it would cost $70 per month for a hot spot that would come out of the youth commissions budget. There are no Youth Commission specific logos around the Seattle area. It would be a cost that could be better spent. Should stick with the city logo to be easily identified and maybe in coming years down the line once Youth Commission is established in the community we can address the need or want of a logo again. 2. Select Vest Color The commission is getting 12 vests ordered to wear at events, volunteering, and other city happenings to be visible to the community and others. The members selected a bright blue. The vests will then be taken to get "Edmonds Youth Commission" screen printed on the back and a City of Edmonds patch sewn onto the front. 3. Quarterly Youth Forum Haven't seen much participation from Youth Commission members to work on assigned homework to make this event happen. Members were given topics and homework to complete with only a few members actually submitting and sharing their research. Members will start holding each other accountable and reminding the group what must be accomplished. Members would like a forum in September but there still hasn't been any date, time, plan of action only topics chosen. There was talk of advertising for the youth forum on news such as MEN but members haven't really remembered the advertising so its probably not the most effective method to reach youth of Edmonds. 4. Mike Nelsons statement from 8/5/19 about Youth Commission Read statement that was sent to Mike Nelson that he read aloud at 8/5/19 meeting: Page 1.1.3 4. Continued.... Councilmember Nelson, The Youth Commission has been working as a team to figure out what tasks they would like to accomplish together. They are working on being seen and valued in the community. Specifically, they are staying current and watching the City Council meetings; discussing how those topics impact youth and developing a platform to provide youth centric feedback on those topics (discussing ideas such as quarterly youth forums and releasing statements on current events in the City of Edmonds from their perspective). A few of their activities include: • They took part in the annual Edmonds Sand Sculpture competition at Marina Beach this July, winning the Organization Category with their sculpture called "The Spirit of Edmonds" • Volunteered with the Students Saving Salmon and friends restoration project on shell creek in March. • Met with the Puget Sound Regional Council in April participating in a city planning activity for the projected growth of our area and sharing what is important to them, the youth. They are an incredible group of teen volunteers and as to be expected with any volunteer role, it takes time to become established and find their voice. We are very excited for what the future holds for the Youth Commission and their ability to provide feedback from a population that is often so difficult to tap into. Sincerely, Shannon Burley & Casey Colley 5. Discussed Climate Presentation from 8/5/19 City Council meeting We discussed the past climate presentation by Shane Hope and what Edmonds largest greenhouse gas contributors are. We looked over the report and what we would need to do to become carbon neutral by 2050. Jacob then took on the challenge of drafting a statement to share about how the commission feels about climate change and the proposal from Shane Hope on how to accomplish being carbon neutral. 6. Discuss if Youth Commission will be doing a retreat It is difficult to get everyone together so Caitlin put a poll on GroupMe to select a date and time - frame to do a retreat which would consist of an activity and food! With a poll we are hoping to get the majority of the commission together for getting to know one another and thus being able to function as a unit smoothly!
