CALL TO ORDER Chairman Stephany Janssen called the meeting to order at 6:04 pm in room 123 in the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St, Edmonds II. MINUTES - Approval of 8/21/19 Chairman StephanyJanssen moved to approve 8/21/19 meeting's minutes Co -Chairman Kaleb Nichols seconded that motion Motion passed unanimously III. DIVERSITY COMMISSION MEETING - We won't be able to attend their meeting today - Their Chairman will attend our 9/18 meeting so we can ask about their event at Edmonds-Woodway, their statement process, etc. - How do they scale down national issues for our community? - How do they get youth to participate in their forum? - What was the format of their forum? - How do they get people to participate in their commission? IV. CLIMATE MEETING STATEMENT DEBRIEF - Casey was proud/excited for the successful statement - Jacob did really good in both writing and delivery Page 1.1.2 In the future, we could have all gone up with affirmations/support V. SHARE COUNCIL MEETINGS 9/3 Meeting: - They want to increase sales tax in Edmonds a little bit to get additional funding for a variety of programs - We did it differently from Tacoma so that our county gets separate sales tax from us so we can use that money for our city specifically or for joint projects - Marsh open house near the end of September - Time for people to ask about studies and general progress - This study was not business related, so it may be more objective - Citizen group Save Our Marsh may also attend - Should the Youth Commission attend? - 1.8 million more people and 1.2 million more jobs by 2050 - Wanted more building options so we have space without increasing greenhouse emissions too much - New jobs in urban areas so we can preserve environmentally sensitive areas - By reducing commuting (by adding housing options) there is positive environmental impacts - Edmonds can't have too high population density - Housing Commission for long term housing issues and goals - Attend Housing Commission meetings w/ public input? - No greenhouse gas quotas for Edmonds, they do exist in Vancouver (needs incentives for builders) VI. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN EDMONDS? CURRENT NEWS - Edmonds Schools Foundations received $5000 for Career and College Readiness - Interesting facts about demographics of Edmonds School District - Estimated 650 students experience homelessness per year in Edmonds School District - Large percentage of student body qualify for free/reduced lunch - Mayoral race: - Multiple candidate forums - It's good to keep up and see what topics are being brought up and what their policy ideas and opinions are - YWCA needs donations of things like toiletries - If we don't address it, at least a good idea for a school club - We got an email from an important member of the Rotary Club that will be sent out later Page 1.1.3 Observation by Jacob: there is not severe wildfire smoke VII. QUARTERLY YOUTH FORUM - Cole won't be able to make 10/10 - OUR FORUM WILL BE OCTOBER 10th! Owen will be at the Hate Crimes table - 4-6 pm because people can be there after school - Age limit: 13-20 - General Format: - Introduction of commission members, talk about Youth Commission, give specifics of format - Have background information packet - Brief presentation about each table with questions that will be answered - At each table, brief presentation of important background information - Five tables with two commission members each centered around an issue - People choose tables in rotations (3 rotations of 20 minutes) - Exit survey on their way out (are you from Edmonds? Yes or no), as well as getting emails for an email list - We then divided into groups to work on 1) advertising 2) compiling information 3) event plan - Publicity: - Contact every high school (Edmonds-Woodway, Scriber Lake, Lynnwood, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, King's, others?) - Flyers - Announcements - Word of mouth - Facebook ad for parents - Contact MyEdmondsNews, Edmonds Beacon, Everett Herald - Contact My Edmonds Moms - Flyers for local businesses, libraries, cafe cork boards - Instagram flyer - District -wide email? - Shortening & Formatting Youth Forum Information Done - Exit Survey Done - Forum Timing Done VIII. NATIVE AMERICAN LAND STATEMENT - Statement about Native American land created by council elders - Do we want to use this statement? - Do we want to put it on agendas, say it in meetings, or both? Page 1.1.4 We should do both because there is no downside Statement may be amended because it only represents one We can't give back the land, but we need to have more than words working with the tribes Chairman StephanyJanssen moved to add the Native American Land Recognition Statement to our meeting agendas and to read it at the beginning of each meeting Co -Chairman Kaleb Nichols seconded that motion Motion passed unanimously IX. HOMEWORK - Check your email for flyer distribution - September 20th is when advertising starts - Spread Youth Forum by word of mouth - Work with table partners to create your background presentation and how you fill facilitate conversation - Think about questions for Diversity Commission person X.
