CALL TO ORDER Chairman Stephany Janssen called the meeting to order at 6:01 pm in room 123 in the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St, Edmonds Chairman Stephany Janssen read the Native American Land Statement II. MINUTES - Approval of 9/4/19 Chairman StephanyJanssen moved to approve 9/4/19 meeting's minutes Secretary Owen Lee seconded that motion Motion passed unanimously III. DIVERSITY COMMISSION PAT VALLE - Took a few years to get off the ground - Pat Valle, Mindy Woods, Donny Griffon, Dean Olsen - Pat: With Diversity Commission since founding - Pat: Chair this year - Mindy: briefly homeless after apartment was taken over by black mold - Mindy: now advocate for homelessness - Donny: excited for youth participation - Expanded to include Diversity Film Series - Held youth forums - Held on early release Fridays - Had bullying specifically as a topic Page 1.1.2 Had food Struggle with getting youth participation Their advertising was: - Director of Diversity for Edmonds School District (Kimberly Armstrong) - Working from district level allows them to send out announcements and allows us to put up flyers - Community service hours? - Our advertising will include reaching out to clubs - They haven't used social media, but used My Edmonds News - They have had raffles, but maybe not the biggest draw? - Not advertise it, but make it fun for people there Their diversity film series starts in October (which we can distribute at our event) Address issues regarding inequity, racial statements, racism - Use My Edmonds News and Facebook to release statements To get people to participate, they have a simple application - Subcommittee reads applications - People participate (9 members) - Subcommittees hold people accountable - Partnership Committee to work with other groups doing similar work - Policy Committee focuses on different departments in City of Edmonds and develops policy to present - Events Committee plans events - People move between committees How they dealt with the cookie: - Should have been more clear during the meeting - When contacting others on the commission, people said they were unaware - Remained vague in message, refused to retract it - Lots of controversy, as well as positive affirmation - Make sure everyone clearly agrees with what we are doing - If it's something controversial, RUN IT BY LAWYERS ON RETAINER WITH CITY OF EDMONDS - Caroline Douglas can give insights into framing messages and what to include or not to include For getting diverse applicants: - Many forms, not just school, age, race, ethnicity, etc. Page 1.1.3 Actively seek a diverse pool of applicants Application has place for self -identification - Once we have accomplishments, it may be easier to get applications - E.E.A.C.H. is part of Edmonds School District - All about diversity and inclusion - Meet at district building - Attend on Monday? (September 23rd at 6:30) - Statement making process: - Wait for background before issuing statements - Have a statement template for quick response, but spend time and care on it first - Have a commission put together a draft and send it out - Turnaround times: don't want to get ahead of police work - Try to get 24-48 hours - Make a blanket immediate statement saying they look forward to police reports How to be diverse within the commission: - They are struggling to get outside the bowl - Just recently added youth member - Get ideas from Facebook discussions We want to go to one of their meetings (first Wednesday of the month) Go to first DIVERSITY FILM MOVIE on the THIRD SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH at Edmonds Theater at noon CHAIRMAN STEPHANY JANSSEN MOVED, SECONDED BY ALISSA BERMAN, TO AMEND THE AGENDA AS FOLLOWS: 1. QUARTERLY YOUTH FORUM - Instagram Flyer - Physical Flyers - Clubs - Announcements - People's moms can post it on My Edmonds Moms - Targeted Facebook advertising - Reaching out to schools - We are ordering pizzas Page 1.1.4 Get whiteboards/butcher paper Raffles: - Hydroflask - Local Businesses Gift Cards - Candy CHAIRMAN STEPHANY JANSSEN MOVED, SECONDED BY OWEN LEE, TO EXTEND OUR MEETING TO 7:53 MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY V. HOMEWORK - Stephany will distribute flyers Owen will finish and send out flyer Caitlin will lead a group to distribute posters (Caitlin, Owen, Sydney, Jacob) - Alissa will get district approval and go to Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Scriber Lake, Meadowdale to distribute flyers - Also get people's names to send morning announcements to - Shoot for next week - Owen will add more detailed information about forum on website - Stephany and Kaleb will finish forum introduction Make background information presentation with partner - Icebreaker - Background information - Guiding questions - Bullet answers to fill space if necessary Owen will make a supply list VI.
