Struggle with getting youth participation
Their advertising was:
- Director of Diversity for Edmonds School District (Kimberly
Armstrong)
- Working from district level allows them to send out
announcements and allows us to put up flyers
- Community service hours?
- Our advertising will include reaching out to clubs
- They haven't used social media, but used My Edmonds News
- They have had raffles, but maybe not the biggest draw?
- Not advertise it, but make it fun for people there
Their diversity film series starts in October (which we can distribute at
our event)
Address issues regarding inequity, racial statements, racism
- Use My Edmonds News and Facebook to release statements
To get people to participate, they have a simple application
- Subcommittee reads applications
- People participate (9 members)
- Subcommittees hold people accountable
- Partnership Committee to work with other groups doing similar
work
- Policy Committee focuses on different departments in City of
Edmonds and develops policy to present
- Events Committee plans events
- People move between committees
How they dealt with the cookie:
- Should have been more clear during the meeting
- When contacting others on the commission, people said they
were unaware
- Remained vague in message, refused to retract it
- Lots of controversy, as well as positive affirmation
- Make sure everyone clearly agrees with what we are doing
- If it's something controversial, RUN IT BY LAWYERS ON RETAINER WITH
CITY OF EDMONDS
- Caroline Douglas can give insights into framing messages and what to
include or not to include
For getting diverse applicants:
- Many forms, not just school, age, race, ethnicity, etc.
Page 1.1.3
Actively seek a diverse pool of applicants
Application has place for self -identification
- Once we have accomplishments, it may be easier to get applications
- E.E.A.C.H. is part of Edmonds School District
- All about diversity and inclusion
- Meet at district building
- Attend on Monday? (September 23rd at 6:30)
- Statement making process:
- Wait for background before issuing statements
- Have a statement template for quick response, but spend time and care
on it first
- Have a commission put together a draft and send it out
- Turnaround times: don't want to get ahead of police work
- Try to get 24-48 hours
- Make a blanket immediate statement saying they look forward to
police reports
How to be diverse within the commission:
- They are struggling to get outside the bowl
- Just recently added youth member
- Get ideas from Facebook discussions
We want to go to one of their meetings (first Wednesday of the month)
Go to first DIVERSITY FILM MOVIE on the THIRD SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH at
Edmonds Theater at noon
