March 28, 2019
8:01 AM — 9:30 AM
Edmonds Center for the Arts
Meeting called to order at 8:01 am
Board Members/Administration in attendance: Apple Catha, Kiersten Christensen, Carrie Hulbert, Matt
McCulloch, Jenny Shore, Mary Kay Sneeringer, James Spangler, Mark Von Gunten
City of Edmonds representatives in attendance: Patrick Doherty
Ed! Members/Guests: Carol Sheldon (Carol Sheldon Hair Designs), Pam Stuller (Walnut Street Coffee),
Dean Olson (Diversity Commission)
Public Comment: Dean Olson, of the Edmonds Diversity Commission, reported that they are working on
a City Council proposal requiring all businesses in the City of Edmonds to have closed -captioning on at all
times on televisions in public spaces (bars/gyms/restaurants/lobbies etc.). This would help remove any
stigma associated with a person having to request that closed -captioning be turned on.
Approval of previous meeting's minutes: Mark moved to approve the meeting minutes of March 14,
2019. Apple seconded. All approved, none opposed.
President's Report:
• Handling delinquent assessments: perhaps requiring business license renewals to being current
on assessments --further discussion is warranted.
• Board member nominations are due April 3rd. Dawn at Engels might be interested in being on
the board.
• Kiersten made a motion that Carol Sheldon be the replacement for Clayton Moss' board position
which has two years left on the term. Jenny seconded — no discussion: all approved, none
opposed. Welcome Carol!
• Mark made a motion that board meetings be held once a month. Matt seconded. All approved,
none opposed. Kiersten then moved that those meeting be held on the 2nd Thursday of each
month beginning in May 2019. Mark seconded: all approved, none opposed.
Treasurer's Report: Per Carrie, at the end of February we are $2,000 behind last year's collection of
assessments at this point. Everything else is on track, with $14,000 paid in expenses so far.
New Businesses added to the BID: None.
City Update: The national Main Street conference went very well. Patrick got lots of good ideas and
information. Also, the first Creative District committee meeting will be held April 11th.
Committee Updates:
• Marketing: The current article on the website is about tax tips.
• Appearance & Environment: Discussions with property owners regarding after-hours parking
are ongoing.
Communication and Outreach:
• Salish Crossing expansion: the businesses at Salish Crossing have decided not to join the BID
at this time but will discuss it again next year.
• The online survey will be going out soon, and a slideshow will be running in the background
on the television during the annual meeting.
• Grant Program: Apple will be putting in a grant request soon.
• Administration: It was discussed at the last committee meeting that having a board member
present Ed! updates at one City Council meeting per month would be a good way to keep the
Council informed of our progress. We could rotate the presentations among board members.
It would also be a good idea to have a monthly column in The Beacon and My Edmonds News
giving Ed! updates.
Meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m. Next Board meeting April 11th at 8:00 a.m. at the ECA.
