Student Signature: Parent/Guardian Signature: Packet Pg. 15 3.2.a Edmonds Youth Commission Application Sydney Pearson 1. I have always loved being involved and volunteering in the community. When I was younger, I participated in adult led volunteer work such as assembling Thanksgiving food baskets for Seattle's needy, preparing meals for a women's homeless shelter, and cooking quality meals to serve'to the homeless at Pike Place Market. The past two years at Madrona Middle School, I served as an officer of the leadership and service group. Through this, we organized assemblies, planned fundraisers, volunteered at the school's functions, and ran the school wide service projects, which included financing the construction of a new school for children in Bali and raising money for a community fish farm in Nigeria. This work earned me a spot to attend WE Day with my fellow leadership group. Outside of school, I also helped set up the Annual Pacific Little League Auction. This year, I knew I wanted to make a difference within my school, so I ran for Freshmen Class Vice President and won. My work for this has included the organizing, decorating, and participation in all homecoming activities, the planning and execution of fundraisers, can collecting for the school wide food drive, and representing my class as a leader. In addition to my leadership role, I am involved in several extracurriculars: band, jazz band, theater, racing for the Edmonds Mountain Bike Team, and skiing. Just this last year, I already served a full term on the Edmonds Youth Commission, reaching out to other youth and speaking up so our voices are heard. I loved being able to be a part of this wonderful group. So far, we have worked great together and have already come up with fantastic ideas that simply need to be executed. Being able to see some of my hard work pay off with the Commission possibly initiating last year's ideas would be such a reward, so I want to make sure I get to have this great opportunity again. Both my community involvement and dedication to activities outside of school have given me excellent experience in money management, developed my organizational skills, used my problem solving (because the tasks at hand frequently went wrong), and took advantage of my strong leadership tendencies. 2. With my involvement on the Edmonds Youth Commission, I will bring many personal skills and strengths that will improve the team. One thing that comes very easily to me is organization. No matter how busy I am, I am on top of all my school work and ready for any upcoming plans (with the help of my color coded planner). I am also a very efficient worker who consistently produces quality work. My success in school has also given me a foundation of needed knowledge and strategies to creatively solve problems. Along Packet Pg. 16 3.2.a with this, I am a very reliable person who is strongly committed to every opportunity I take up; I can always be counted on to show up and contribute meaningful ideas to the group. 3. Everyday, as I walk around school, the conversations I have and overhear never vary much: "What did you get on the bio exam?" "What day do we get out again?" "Hey, how are you!" They're nothing spectacular, but a few phrases have always stuck out to me. Those words are "I'm so tired" and "I'm so stressed." These are not unusual, even for me, to say. But, why are they so commonplace? The more I look for it, the more I see how it seems that practically every kid is either tired, stressed, worried, or everything combined. Pressures from every angle seem to trap kids, even at my own high school, so much that everything is simply too overwhelming. School, family, friends, and expectations all build, and all too often, students have no way to unbury themselves. Right now, mental health is a huge issue that is affecting and damaging youth across the world. Overall, it is estimated that 31.9 of adolescents have an anxiety disorder, according to a National Institute of Mental Health study. To add, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, the third leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 24 is suicide. In my community, the statistics may not be as drastic, but they are still prevalent. To me, it seems that mental health, especially that of youth, is going under -noticed and under -helped. So, as a member of the Edmonds Youth Commission, I would: 1. Strive to educate more students about mental health; 2. Provide more students with resources to help deal with anxiety, stress, depression, and more, and, 3. Enable students to connect with each other and express their own thoughts and ideas regarding mental health and the negative stigma often placed on it. School is the one place where almost all youth have to go. Everyday, we sit in classrooms and listen to teachers talk, possibly about subjects we have a genuine interest in, or, more often than not, topics that we couldn't care less about. Students are required to sit through monotonous six hour days, so why not make at least a part of that day truly and immediately beneficial? I know that for me and many others like me who are planning on entering or are in the full IB (International Baccalaureate) program, health classes are not a graduation requirement. Even for those in health classes, teachings about mental health are sadly often absent from the lesson plan. This year, my English class did have one forty -minute talk about suicide prevention, but that was it. That was not enough. In order to raise more awareness about the mental health Packet Pg. 17 3.2.a issues so many students struggle with and to help students that do struggle with mental health, I plan to: • Find, or, possibly with the help of the Edmonds Youth, Commission, make curriculums regarding mental health that would last at least an entire class period, if not multiple sessions long; ■ Distribute these more comprehensive lessons to counselors to present in all English classes, as every student is required to take English; • Make sure the counselors individually check in with each student after the entirety of the lessons to make sure the students have a resource to talk to, and, • Provide extra resources of therapists and counselors for students. These presentations would include statistics about mental health, signs of mental health issues, ways to help other struggling with mental health, and ways to prevent suicide/other harmful acts. Most importantly, these presentations would work towards normalizing mental illnesses, especially among students. They would aim to stop villainizing those who do struggle with mental health, as making them seem like a threat only mentally hurts them and those around them who would otherwise be willing to help. The goal is to stop the negative stigma surrounding people with mental health, educate others about mental health, help those who struggle with mental health, and provide resources for therapy and counseling. Still, school can sometimes feel like a hostile environment for students, especially if they are struggling to talk to someone about what they are going through. So, in order to bring the discussion outside of school and gather opinions on the talk about mental health from youth community members, I plan to: • Have the Edmonds Youth Commission host mental health "forums" for the youth of Edmonds to attend, held in a big enough venue, possible the library top floor room; • Either host potential speakers or a panel to talk on the issues surrounding mental health and, again, normalize the discussion; or, • Create small table -groups where teens can open up about their struggles and get help from their peers. Providing a safe space for teenagers to simply talk to each other would do a great deal in not only connecting the youth community, but also giving teens the opportunity to receive advice from peers and share their own stories. Packet Pg. 18 3.2.a My hopes are that through recognition of the issue, education on the issue, and action on the issue, the mental health of students across Edmonds will improve. This is what our community desperately needs. What volunteer/work experience or extracurricular activities have you been involved in that may contribute to your success as on Edmonds Youth Commission member? Having been involved in many orchestras over the past few years as both a principal and section member violist, I have honed in on my leadership as well as accountability skills. For example, as a principal (leader) of a section, I have made my best effort to set the best example for the members of my section through always holding a positive attitude despite whatever may occur in rehearsal. Additionally, I must be a communicator, making sure everybody in the section knows what changes or communicating with other principals and the conductor in order to match bowings or articulations. As a section member, being a positive contribution and blending into the group as a cohesive unit has, without fail, been my priority. In addition to the skills that being in orchestras over the previous years have taught me, volunteering in Seattle teaching an underprivileged 5th grader Violin has been a true honor as it has shown me what patience and perseverance really means, not only to the boy I was tutoring, but to me as well. From the beginning, I knew it would be tough teaching a beginner how to play the Violin, but after so many attempts at trying to teach him how to play with correct posture, it became evident that I needed a new approach, as was told to me by one of my music teachers. Once I tried multiple different approaches to teaching, one finally worked, and it was extremely satisfying to see my student succeed. That day, I gained a new appreciation to perseverance as it requires much patience, and is applicable in many situations. 2. What personal strengths/skills will you contribute to the success of the Edmonds Youth Commission? My personal strengths include being/having: • Reliability & Organization: I rarely forget to complete tasks that are apart of my responsibility, and that is due to how I am organized, as could be seen in my workspace and planer. • Productivity: Getting things done —whether it's daily homework, projects, emails—within a timely fashion is crucial to me, especially in this time of my life being High School, and so I've done my best to step up to being productive. • Realism: Understanding factors that are occurring to solve a problem, and planning accordingly is, in my opinion, necessary to solve that problem. • Ambitious & Strong Work Ethic: I set goals that might be a little over my head sometimes, but always have worked hard to try to achieve them, even if 1 didn't. • Compassion & Understanding: In order to properly serve a community, it is pivotal to understand who the people are and what their issues are, so then policies can be enacted to benefit them. I refuse to back something that does not benefit the people of the Edmonds community, in any kind of way. Packet Pg. 27 3.2.d 3. What issue impacting the Edmonds community are you most passionate about? Do you have any ideas on how to begin addressing this issue? After recently seeing how the Edmonds School District laid off about 45 teachers, education will be an issue affecting Edmonds students, as they won't be able to get the one-on-one help and learning assistance they may need with the shortfall of teachers. According to. Andi Nofziger, the president of the Edmonds Education Association, "taking 45 teachers away from classrooms that's going to increase class size by three to four to five students." To avoid Students not getting the assistance they may need to understand concepts they did not understand (from the larger class sizes), tutoring programs that are already set up and funded by the city (as found in the Sno-Isle Library) need to be promoted in the schools, letting the students know that they have resources, and should utilize them to the best of their ability. Moreover, if a student is not able to access that resource, then it should be brought to the school by way of an after school program, that involves peer -to -peer or volunteer -to -student tutoring.
