2020-06-18 Cemetery Board MinutesCity of Edmonds Edmonds Memorial Cemetery Board Meeting Minutes June 18, 2020 Via Zoom Call to Order Chair Jerry Janacek called the meeting to order at 4:05 Members Present: Jerry Janacek Joan Longstaff Tracy Little Melissa Johnson Kerry Radley Members Absent: Approval of Minutes - February 20, 2020 Staff Present: Rich Lindsay Guest: Honorary Board Member Dale Hoggins Honorary Board Member Betty Gaeng Finance Report: No Transaction Summaries since October 2019. Rich will look into. Chair Report: Jerry mentioned the May article in the Seattle Times with Edmonds Cemetery's Sexton Cliff Edwards on the front page. It highlighted what local area cemeteries were doing for Memorial Day observances during the Covid-19 crisis. Jerry will contact new prospective board member Ashley Robinson to see if she is still interested in becoming a board member and where we left off with her approval by the Mayor and City Council back in March. Staff Report: • Rich Lindsay reports that the cemetery is running smoothly during the Covid shutdown, the Parks Dept. staff have been helping Cliff with cemetery maintenance. Rich was able to hire a seasonal employee for the cemetery starting July 1st, Kyle Holyfield. • No Sales and Burial Report this month, with no seasonal helpers this summer, Cliff has been extra busy out on the cemetery grounds. Will have a report for the July meeting compiled. New Parks and Rec. director, Angie Fisher, is now in place. Rich is highly complimentary of her skills and ability to hit the ground running during the Covid shutdown. For now we will continue to hold our Board meetings via Zoom until Mayor Nelson deems it safe to meet in person again. 1 Sales Report - Sales and Services for January 16-February 20, 2020 Cliff will compile Sales and Services report for February 21 to July 16th for the next Board meeting. Month Year to Date Projections Grave Sales 1 4 40 Niche Sales 0 0 25 Burials 2 5 55 Inurements 1 1 25 Old Business: Discussed renewing our Beacon Ad; we have an advertising budget of $3,200.00 for 2020. Joan will contact Jim Pompeo at the Beacon to inquire about pricing for an ongoing ad for the year. Jerry reminded the Board that we need to take the online certification for Open Public Meeting Act. He will ask Carrie Haslam to resend the link to Board Members. WBinT planning will continue, it was agreed that the format will be different this year because of Covid; we will not be meeting in person at the cemetery to avoid a large gathering of people. We will instead post an article to MEN and the Edmonds Beacon with this year's theme, `Recognizing Educators'. Betty Gaeng will write the articles and Tracy Little will be the point person for organizing the content with photos. Other ideas will be explored as well to bring the information virtually to the community. The Educators being recognized this year are, Steven and Jennifer Miller, Gordon Smith, David Ault and Louise Baker. Dale Hoggins will contact the Retired Teachers Organization and let them know the plans. New Business: • Dale would like the Board to look at the Cemetery Comprehensive Plan at the July meeting to see if we are meeting our goals with growth etc. Does it need to be revised? • Jerry would like to invite our new Parks and Rec.
