During my middle school years at Madrona K-8 I was involved with SALT. SALT stands; for Student Activist Leadership Team. We raised money for building a new school in BALI, India. The money we raised came from these volunteer activities the SALT team was responsible for. The activities were: Madrona Bear Scare; a fun family Halloween 3 event. I help set up the Haunted House and dressed up for the kids to go through the 2 Haunted House. Madrona Rock-A-Thon where myself and the Middle Schoolers set up a; the gym so we could stay up all night supporting our cause. We also had to tear down the gym and clean it up the next morning. We raised a good amount of money for the Rock-A-Thon. Myself and the Middle schoolers put together two events for the younger students K-3 and 4-6th grade where parents could drop their children off and we would Q run the art and game activities. Parents paid a fee and we led the kids in these c activities. c a 2. What personal strengths/skills will you contribute to the success of the Edmonds U Youth Commission? a I have been very committed to Madrona's SALT Program and when I sign up for something I give it my full commitment and full attention. I am looking forward to serve as an advocate for youth needs and improvement in youth policies, directly engaging the community in the process. I have been through Mountlake Terrace CPR and First Aid Training program to be certified in case there is an emergency in any situation and Packet Pg. 7 anywhere. I have been very resourceful helping my neighbors and parents friends mow lawns and clean up any yard work necessary. 3. What issue impacting the Edmonds community are you most passionate about? Do you have any ideas on how to begin addressing this issue? Outline a project idea for the Edmonds youth commission that may begin to address this issue. I am a freshman at EWHS and I see social anxiety as a huge fear for so many students starting a new school and a completely new system of how to do things. Not all students are ready for High School and the many nuances it provides. There is so much fear in school shootings, depression, anxiety, racial tension to a point that it overwhelms students. We need a better system to help one another through this social anxiety. Kindness and helping others is so important for everyone. Students have higher expectations in school work putting large amounts of stress on the students shoulders. The students know High-school leads to bigger and better things for College; however we need a support group to help one another. Why can't schools be given someone they don't know and have them do something kind for them in their grade level. This would give them an opportunity to know someone outside of social media and the stress social media provides. A kind word can go a long way. At EWHS they have a program called; "Link Crew" which connects a junior with a freshman for their first week of school; however it doesn't address these issues of social anxiety. We need a better system and if we could connect people who don't know one another and provide a kind act this could go along way in life down the road. For the past six months, I have been an active volunteer at the Edmonds Food Bank. Throughout the many hours that I have spent with members of the community in need of support, I have become aware of the dire need of organizations, such as food banks, in Edmonds. I have also been able to spend time forming relationships with our customers; this has given me the ability to learn about the various circumstances that have led them to need our assistance including job loss, family medical issues, and the high cost of living. Additionally, I have attended the Youth Migrant Project which is an annual, week-long experience where we serve migrant workers in Burlington through organizing a food bank, serving meals, and playing with the kids at the daycare. The Project also allowed us to gain a further understanding of what migrant workers experience on a daily basis by participating in their daily duties on the farm. I also have volunteered at the Westgate Chapel's Thanksgiving Event where families in need of a place to have a meal are given a Thanksgiving dinner along with access to a food and clothing bank. This past year, I was also chosen as team captain for my high school volleyball team; I have been playing volleyball for many years and have gained leadership skills and learned the importance of being a team player. 2. As the volunteer in charge of stocking, organizing, and distributing the baby supplies at the food bank, I have become aware of the dire need of basic baby supplies and formula in our community. For this reason, I have come to be most passionate about the issue of undernourished babies and struggling mothers in need of help to adequately care for their babies. To begin to address this issue, I propose a project to further expand the v access of free baby supplies in our community through the donations of local businesses with the cooperation of the Edmonds Food Bank. I would like to include a survey of the families with babies to determine what needs are not being met by the food bank and to cn identify supplies that we do not provide but are requested. Using this information, the 21 Youth Commission could contact local businesses and create relationships with w community leaders to provide continuous resources and fulfill the need. as E L) a r w a Packet Pg. 14 2.1.c 2018-2020 Edmonds Youth Commission Reference Form Please submit 1-2 references that can include a teacher, coach, or community leader who knows you well (and is not related to you) complete this form. Phone #: 425.771.1375 Packet Pg. 19 Recommendation of Jacob Willcox for 2018-2020 Edmonds Youth Commission Submitted by Stephen Lang as an addendum to the application form. I have known Jacob and his family for approximately 14 years. My wife and I have lived in Edmonds since 1996. The Wilcox family moved into a house across the street from us approximately fifteen years ago. We have watched Jacob, Jemma and Jude grow up and are very impressed in how they have matured in those fourteen years. Jacob's parents, James and Jennifer, have done an outstanding job raising all three of their children. All three are respectful„ intuitive, active,, caring and critical thinking young adults. The three siblings have a wonderful and close relationship and Jacob has always set the appropriate example. Regarding Jacob: I started my professional career as a school teacher, Accordingly, I have been around young people most of my life. Jacob stands out as one of the most impressive young men I have known. Jacob is serious but always has the time to stop by for a chat. I speak to his academic achievement because he doesn't stop by to show me his grade card but I'm certain he is a high achiever in the class room. One of the things I most like about Jacob is that he is a free thinker. When others in his age group are concerned about driving a car, Jacob rides his bicycle to and from school. When others in his age group are concerned about social activities, Jacob is dedicated to hard work in school and involvement in track and field. Not that Jacob doesn't drive or that he doesn't have a social life, as he does, but those things are not at the top of his list of needs. I am proud to endorse Jacob for a position on the Edmonds Youth Commission. I know of no one more deserving. Jacob will make the Commission proud as well.
